May 12-15, 2011

The exhibition Science And Technical Innovations of Russia takes place in Madrid. It is one of the main events of the Year of Russia in Spain and the Year of Spain in Russia. Significant place at this exhibition belongs to the achievements of Russia in space exploration. A special attention is paid at the WSO-UV as at the most important item of collaboration between Spain and Russia in the field of space research. WSO-UV is presented at this exhibition by three organizations - INASAN, Roscosmos and SENER.

February 12, 2010

The test communication session between the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Madrid, Spain) and Institute of Astronomy RAS (Moscow, Russia) was held. During the session the successful work of all basic systems of the ground segment (located in Russia and in Spain) was demonstrated. The official persons have attended this event including representatives from Russian and Spanish embassies, space agencies of both countries, scientists as well as experts from industry from Russia and Spain.

This event is a very important step in project development. It has shown not only the progress in work on ground segment but the high efficiency of Russian-Spanish collaboration on the project as well.

the Decision on cooperation in development of the WSO-UV project between Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), Russia and National Space Agency of Ukraine has been signed. In the framework of this decision Ukraine will take part in study and assessment of the optics of the T-170M telescope.

December 23, 2009

The Agreement between the Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), Russia and the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) on cooperation in the Development of the Field Camera Unit for the "World Space Observatory-Ultraviolet" Project was signed. In accordance with this agreement Spain provides the Field camera unit (ISSIS) – one of science instruments of the observatory for high quality imaging in UV and optical ranges.

September 29-October 3, 2008, Madrid

Series of meetings on WSO-UV project were held.

At the Workshop on Scientific Software WSO (September 29-30, 2008) experts from NASA and ESA shared their experience in development of the software for scientific data processing for big space projects (Hubble Space Telescope, Herschel etc.) and gave their recommendations for the WSO-UV project. Discussion of these questions has also become one of the topics of the Spanish-Russian technical meeting on WSO-UV ground segment held on October 1.
At the meeting between representatives of
Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) questions on extension of cooperation between Spain and Russia on the WSO-UV were discussed.
On October 2-3, 2008 the technical meeting on field cameras for the WSO-UV project was held where Spanish side presented their suggestions on the field cameras.
The very constructive atmosphere that characterized all these meetings undoubtedly allowed to make important steps towards the success of the Project.

March 19, 2007

Federal Space Agency of Russia (Roscosmos) and the Spanish Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) signed the agreement on cooperation in the field of astrophysical research in the ultraviolet domain according to the ''World Space Observatory- Ultraviolet Project.

The aim of the WSO-UV project is the creation of a space observatory operating in ultraviolet range of the spectrum which is inaccessible for earth-based observation. Major scientific aims of "WSO/UV'' Project are the:

  1. Exploration of most intriguing items of Universe evolution (including reionization, chemical evolution , search for diffuse dark baryonic matter);

  2. Nature of accretion processes in the Universe;

  3. Formation and evolution of Sun-like stars and their planetary disks;

  4. Chemical composition of atmospheres of the Solar system planets as well as those of extra-solar planetary systems.

Both agencies compromise to colaborate in the elaboration of the scientific program and on the scientific management of the project. From the  technical point of view, both agencies compromise to develop, in close colaboration, the ground segment for the ``WSO/UV'' project. CDTI compromises to fund the development of the Remote Control System for the Ground Stations Control center, the Mission Operations Center (MOC), the Science Operations Center (SOC), the Science Archive and the Scientific Data Processing Center. CDTI also compromises to support the operations of the WSO/UV satellite during its lifetime.

The Parties appoint the following organizations responsible for the direct implementation of cooperation in the frame of the Agreement.

From Roscosmos:

  • The Institute of Astronomy RAS, which is the Head Authority of the SIC
    development, Ground Scientific Complex and flight program realization;

  • Lavochkin Association which is the Head authority of ``Spektr-UF''
    spacecraft; Ground Control Complex (as it concerns the Russian part),
    Roscomos is responsible for providing the WSO/UV Project with launcher
    and launch facilities.

From CDTI:

  • The Returns of Scientific Programmes and Large Facilities Department. Directorate of Aeronautic, Space and Industrial Returns.

  • The Complutense University of Madrid (Vice-chancellery of Research and Scientific Politics), in charge of the Spanish scientific participation in the WSO/UV Project.
